What is Computer Maintenance and its Importance

The term “computer maintenance” comprises of two words: computer and maintenance. To be able to understand what computer maintenance is all about, you need to first know what these words mean.

A computer is simply an electronic device that has the ability to process, store and retrieve data. This machine or device carries out these operations and calculations based on instructions provided by a hardware or software program. Thus a computer is made up of both hardware and software components. Hardware includes all the physical parts of a computer (keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc.) while software consists of programs that communicate to the computer which task to perform through a preprogrammed code. In simpler terms, software is a set of instructions that tell the computer how to work.

The word maintenance is derived from the word maintain which means to preserve or keep something in an existing state. Maintenance is the act of maintaining or the state of being maintained.

This therefore means that we can define computer maintenance as the practice of keeping computers in a good state.

These days everyone has a need for a computer as they are useful for professional purposes, entertainment, e-learning, online shopping, and so on. Since computers have become an integral part of our lives, it is important that we handle them with care. Here are a few reasons why computer maintenance is importance.

  1. Prevention of data loss: Prevention of data loss and data corruption is considered one of the most important reasons of computer maintenance. Most if not all other reasons for maintaining computers point towards the loss of data. Computers also act as storage devices and people store a lot of personal, business or professional information on their computers. That said, data loss can wreak havoc on your life. In the case where a computer is infected with a malware, it may cause corruption of these files. However, keeping your computer maintained will lessen the likelihood of these instances and keep your data safe and secure for when you need to access it.
  2. Early detection of issues: With computers, small issues can become big problems in less than no time. Whether your computer is new or old, problems can pop up at any time. Performing regular computer maintenance keeps things in check and prevents these small issues from becoming severe and causing bigger problems.
  3. Prevention of viruses and other malware: There are innumerable viruses and hardware out there always ready to infect our computers and no matter how often we run virus checks, our computers are still vulnerable to these attacks. Malware gets into our PC through various means like downloading corrupted files like free games and videos, plugging-in corrupted USB or external drives, opening spam emails, visiting an infected website, etc. Some viruses are meant to be a daily annoyance and cause unwanted pop-ups on your screen and also slow down the processing speed of the computer. Others affect the whole operating system and can be costly to fix. However, regular maintenance can help you ensure your antivirus software is up-to-date and working properly.
  4. Speed up Your Computer: We all hate slow computers and it could be very annoying especially when you are in a hurry. Over time, files that are stored on your computer can become disorganized and fragmented, this results in your computer taking longer to load and programs and files access becomes delayed. But with knowledge about computer maintenance, you would be able to perform checks and optimize the speed of your device.
